Book Review: Beneath The Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

beneaththesugarsky‘When Rini lands with a literal splash in the pond behind Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children, the last thing she expects to find is that her mother, Sumi, died years before Rini was even conceived. But Rini can’t let Reality get in the way of her quest – not when she has an entire world to save!

If she can’t find a way to restore her mother, Rini will have more than a world to save: she will never have been born in the first place. And in a world without magic, she doesn’t have long before Reality notices her existence and washes her away. Good thing the student body is well-acquainted with quests…’

The third book in the Wayward Children series, this one revisits the school some time after the events of the first book. There are a few new characters as well as some beloved old ones and they are all trying to bring Sumi (my favourite character from book 1) back to life, hurrah!

Sumi’s daughter falls out of the sky and in to the pond at the back of the school where she is discovered by some familiar characters and one new (chubby mermaid) girl. They decide to help her on her quest to try and find Sumi’s body and some how figure out how to bring her back to life before Rini completely ceases to exist, she is slowly disappearing (one finger at a time) so the race is on.

The usual hilarity ensues and we get to travel to some different worlds via a magic candy bracelet, confront a queen of candy, bargain with the lord of the dead and meet a god of confection! These books are always a joy to read and I have enjoyed them all so far. Book 4 (In an absent dream) is newly released and I can’t wait to read it!

If you like dark humor and interesting characters, please read book 1 in this series! (Every heart a doorway)
